Winter 2010: East Cooper Medical Center |
Winter 2010 | In This Issue | | Message from the CEO This issue features our latest customer East Cooper Medical Center, which is installing the KARL STORZ Patient-Aware OR in its new facility's surgical suite. Like our other customers–all of which are opting to expand their OR-Dashboard solutions—East Cooper recognizes the importance of technology that has the capacity to interoperate with a growing and changing array of systems. This flexibility is crucial for exchanging information efficiently, effectively, and securely, a central requirement for improving patient safety and achieving “meaningful use.” As qualification for obtaining EHR ARRA incentive payments, meaningful use is a hot topic at the upcoming HIMSS conference; and will be featured as part of the Interoperability Showcase’s Patient Care Devices (PCD) exhibit. We’re looking forward to participating there, along with the other PCD exhibits, and hope to see you at the conference. Jeffrey Robbins

| | | Feature Topic: LiveData at East Cooper Medical Center East Cooper Medical Center will install the Patient-Aware OR solution, which combines LiveData OR-Dashboard and KARL STORZ OR1® technologies, in the eight operating rooms in East Cooper's new hospital to be opened this quarter. Established in 1986, the new East Cooper Medical Center (ECMC) facility will have 140 private rooms plus 16 parent-to-be rooms. Based in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, ECMC is part of Tenet Healthcare Corporation, one of the largest investor-owned health care delivery systems in the nation, with 49 acute care hospitals in 12 states. Janie Sinacore-Jaberg, CEO of the hospital, points out that the installation represents an important step in helping the hospital retain a competitive edge: "Patient safety is a priority, both as a hospital and as a business. We recognize that East Cooper Medical Center is not the only option for healthcare, and advancements to patient safety represent a competitive advantage for us. As a leading healthcare provider, it is logical that we team-up with leading technology providers like KARL STORZ and LiveData; supporting our physicians with advanced technology for the good of their patients.”
With 8 new operating rooms and a remote IT staff, East Cooper is pointing the way to future Patient-Aware OR implementations. While OR-Dashboard has been deployed in large, marquee hospitals such as NewYork-Presbyterian, Massachusetts General, Johns Hopkins, and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, hospitals with five to 25 operating rooms represent the vast majority used by surgical patients. The integration software will be installed under the direction of Tenet Healthcare Corporation's IT organization in Dallas, and will securely interface with the technology installed in each of the 8 operating rooms in Mt. Pleasant.

Find out also how LiveData is moving beyond the OR to improve workflow throughout the perioperative suite. HIMSS10: IHE Interoperability Showcase
For the fourth consecutive year, LiveData will participate in the Patient Care Devices exhibit – this year in 3 out of 4 demonstrations showing the benefits of using standardized technology. See OR-Dashboard interoperating with a variety of medical devices and health information systems – Cerner, GE, Epic, McKesson, Siemens, Philips, SIS, Medtronic, Draeger, B. Braun, CareFusion, Hospira, NextGen – for an optimal perioperative process. LiveData will also demonstrate recent advances with OR-Notify sending workflow alerts via VOIP phones, nurse call systems, and paging networks. AORN: LiveData Booth 3852
Visit us at the Annual Congress, March 13-15, in Denver, to learn how OR-Dashboard with Active Time Out makes it easy for hospitals to meet Joint Commission, Surgical Care Improvement Project (SCIP), CMS, and other patient-safety guidelines. Attendees can also learn about LiveData OR-Dashboard and the Patient-Aware OR at the KARL STORZ booth. | LiveData Milestones New Installations East Cooper Medical Center of Mount Pleasant, NC, is installing the KARL STORZ Patient-Aware OR featuring LiveData OR-Dashboard in all 8 operating rooms in its new hospital scheduled to open over the next few months. East Cooper is part of Tenet Healthcare Corporation, one of the largest investor-owned healthcare delivery systems in the nation, with 49 acute care hospitals in 12 states. The new installation will include the latest advances in OR-Dashboard, including Active Time Out. Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center is currently expanding OR-Dashboard 7 new operating rooms, 4 new endoscopy suites, and 5 new interventional radiology suites. The hospital is also upgrading the existing 21 installations.
NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital is deploying OR-Dashboard in 4 new operating rooms at Weill Cornell Medical Center’s Advanced Therapeutic Services Center (ATSC). The ATSC installations will incorporate OR-Dashboards latest features, including Active Time Out for Time Out and closing checklists, as well as real-time tools for monitoring and facilitating activities related to the Surgical Care Improvement Project (SCIP). Advances in LiveData Technology & Solutions LiveData Watchdog, a remote monitoring tool designed to oversee LiveData implementations 24/7, was added to OR-Dashboard installations in November 2008. Feedback from hospital IT departments indicates it is a great success thanks to the highly responsive LiveData Support team, particularly since the tool provides an extra level of quality control for some of the hospital’s own systems or devices (those interfaced to OR-Dashboard). LiveData Watchdog closely tracks OR-Dashboard operation, alerting LiveData Support when there is a disruption, such as disconnection of a physiological monitor or a software system interface that has stopped sending data. In January, LiveData successfully completed testing with a variety of medical devices and Health Information Systems for the Device Enterprise Communication and the Alarm Communication Management profiles at the 2010 IHE Connectathon , a precursor to the HIMSS Interoperability Showcase. Alarm Communication testing included successfully interoperating with Hill-Rom, Polycom, ASCOM and AMCOM – companies that communicate alerts to end users via VOIP phones, nurse call systems, and paging networks. LiveData continues to work with several hospitals to outline a comprehensive perioperative workflow management system. Building upon OR-Dashboard and its underlying RTI technology, this latest solution extends the footprint of LiveData dashboards, control point applications, and notification and reporting systems beyond the OR, to encompass all perioperative departments, systems, and devices into one integrated system. Designed to efficiently manage the entire perioperative workflow, the system will also provide a foundation for enabling hospitals to develop and refine practices that improve the quality of patient care and staff satisfaction. |
