LiveData, KARL STORZ to Observe National Time Out Day
with June 17 Webinar on Universal Protocol for Patient Safety

Presentations will cover the Joint Commission Universal Protocol and World Health Organization Surgical Safety Checklist for eliminating wrong site, wrong procedure, and wrong person surgery.

The half-hour webcast, “Transforming Patient Safety with Active Time Out,” is set for 2pm EDT. Featured speakers include Christine Zambricki, Chief Nursing Officer and COO of Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital, who will describe her facility’s innovative method for carrying out the Time Out protocol, and Phil Brzezinski, VP/Healthcare for LiveData (www.livedata.com), a leader in smart integration and display technology.

Sponsored by the American Nurses’ Association, the Council on Surgical and Perioperative Safety, the Association of Perioperative Registered Nurses [AORN], the Joint Commission and other organizations, NTOD calls attention to the most essential way to adhere to the first principle of the Hippocratic Oath: do no harm. NTOD reminds every member of the surgical team of the most critical pre-surgery steps to reduce surgical complications: validating patient, procedure, and site. This verification process, called Time Out, is part of the Universal Protocol established in 2004 by the Joint Commission, and is the first premise of safe surgery.

Wrong-site surgery and other preventable mistakes still occur too frequently in US operating rooms. That's why The Joint Commission released the Universal Protocol urging that a "time out" precede every surgical procedure to verify the correct patient information prior to incision. In support of this Universal Protocol, AORN began sponsoring National Time Out Day to raise awareness about the importance of requiring the entire surgical team—including physicians, nurses, and surgical technologists—to pause before all invasive procedures to communicate as a group and confirm key information about the patient and procedure to help prevent errors from occurring.
