LiveData, KARL STORZ to Observe National Time Out Day with June 17 Webinar on Universal Protocol for Patient Safety CAMBRIDGE, Massachusetts, June 16, 2009 -- LiveData, Inc. and KARL STORZ Endoscopy America, Inc. are observing National Time Out Day [NTOD], June 17, with a webinar on reducing surgical complications. Presentations will cover the Joint Commission Universal Protocol and World Health Organization Surgical Safety Checklist for eliminating wrong site, wrong procedure, and wrong person surgery. The half-hour webcast, “Transforming Patient Safety with Active Time Out,” is set for 2pm EDT. Featured speakers include Christine Zambricki, Chief Nursing Officer and COO of Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital, who will describe her facility’s innovative method for carrying out the Time Out protocol, and Phil Brzezinski, VP/Healthcare for LiveData (www.livedata.com), a leader in smart integration and display technology.
Sponsored by the American Nurses’ Association, the Council on Surgical and Perioperative Safety, the Association of Perioperative Registered Nurses [AORN], the Joint Commission and other organizations, NTOD calls attention to the most essential way to adhere to the first principle of the Hippocratic Oath: do no harm. NTOD reminds every member of the surgical team of the most critical pre-surgery steps to reduce surgical complications: validating patient, procedure, and site. This verification process, called Time Out, is part of the Universal Protocol established in 2004 by the Joint Commission, and is the first premise of safe surgery.
Wrong-site surgery and other preventable mistakes still occur too frequently in US operating rooms. That's why The Joint Commission released the Universal Protocol urging that a "time out" precede every surgical procedure to verify the correct patient information prior to incision. In support of this Universal Protocol, AORN began sponsoring National Time Out Day to raise awareness about the importance of requiring the entire surgical team—including physicians, nurses, and surgical technologists—to pause before all invasive procedures to communicate as a group and confirm key information about the patient and procedure to help prevent errors from occurring.
LiveData and KARL STORZ (www.karlstorz.com) are co-developing technologies that will extend their OR solutions, reduce surgical complications and improve OR workflow. Last year, they announced that KARL STORZ is adding LiveData’s latest data integration and display capabilities to the KARL STORZ OR1® system. Integrating LiveData OR-Dashboard™ with OR1 brings to hospitals a true Patient-Aware Operating Room™, where the surgical team can focus more fully and effectively on the patient. LiveData OR-Dashboard now includes Active Time Out™, especially designed for full compliance with the Universal Protocol's Time Out guidelines. Active Time Out, which automatically guides and informs the team through the process, includes a device, smaller than a TV remote, for validating each step before continuing to the next. Safe and efficient, Active Time Out makes it easy for the OR team to conduct effective Time Outs consistently. Human engineered to meet both patient safety and OR efficiency objectives, Active Time Out:
• Engages the entire OR Team in the Time Out process • Focuses team attention on one checklist item at a time • Automatically displays supporting info next to each item—no need to search for missing information • Presents up-to-the-minute information for increased safety • Automatically archives data Attendees can register for the webinar by clicking here or contacting Terry Bowman:
