LiveData Sentinel Extends Real Time Integration for Electric Utilities, Promotes Advanced Metering Infrastructure Innovation

CAMBRIDGE, Massachusetts, Jan. 30, 2009 – LiveData, a leading innovator of real-time integration and data visualization technology, today introduced LiveData Sentinel, a connectivity and data integration solution for the electric power industry. Sentinel provides companies with a comprehensive set of connectivity tools and APIs to support integration with real time hardware and software systems.

LiveData’s software interoperates with applications that monitor and control operations (SCADA, DCS, EMS, OMS) and flow data to and between them, across all major public and proprietary protocols. The product is a natural evolution of LiveData’s RTI Server, the company’s real time integration engine.

“Besides helping utilities integrate their data across systems, the new integration solution will help to foster the Smart Grid, an important objective of President Barack Obama,” said Jeffrey Robbins, company founder and CEO. “In asking Congress ‘to act without delay’ in modernizing the grid, President Obama called rightful attention to an opportunity we have to make our national electrical system more efficient, effective, and safe.”

With the continued drive toward Smart Grid and Advanced Metering Infrastructure implementations, the electric power industry is re-thinking traditional models for asset management, revenue management, customer services and network operations, said Robbins. AMI entails the collection and analysis of data from various meters such as electric, gas, and water.

Comprising both software and consulting services, LiveData Sentinel provides the necessary connectivity and data integration capabilities to successfully bring together the two worlds of Smart Grid and AMI operations, as well as emerging ZigBee and Home Area Networking requirements.

The ZigBee Alliance is an association of companies working to enable reliable, cost-effective, low-power, wirelessly networked monitoring and control products based on an open global standard. The goal of the ZigBee Alliance is to provide the consumer with ultimate flexibility, mobility, and ease of use by building wireless intelligence and capabilities into everyday devices.

LiveData Sentinel serves as a data management and delivery gateway that will enable the restructuring and delivery of data to the current and future business applications within the utility. It is focused on three main areas of need:

  • The transaction management issues associated with AMI data delivery into multiple business applications, information on an outage conveyed to Call Center applications, for example;

  • The integration of SCADA, Smart Grid and Distribution Control Systems with business applications such as Outage Management, Asset Management and Customer Operations

  • The intelligent extraction and delivery of key data and events to applications and users individually as a set of subscription alert libraries.

Customers adopting Sentinel will be able to implement a cost effective, standardized platform for all of their real time data transactions that can provide a backbone on which to develop new capabilities without the need for additional costly integration. The platform can be deployed incrementally, providing a cost effective approach to growing their real time transaction solution deployment.

With its deep history in the connectivity, real time data and transaction processing and established track record of providing value to the market and network operations community, LiveData is ideally placed to provide the vision and new capabilities around the delivery and exploitation of real time data in the utility applications landscape of the future.

While already possessing a large number of standard interfaces, LiveData Sentinel’s architecture will enable it to be enhanced continually with new APIs to mainstream operational and business applications, thus staying current with new technology and capabilities.
