Introducing the Patient-Aware Operating Room

OR image

Combining KARL STORZ OR1 and LiveData OR-Dashboard, the Patient-Aware OR provides operating rooms with the ultimate Wall of Knowledge. From case setup through closing, continuously updated information from nursing, surgery and anesthesia systems, as well as surgical equipment, PACS images and lab reports provide the OR team with a complete picture readable at a glance.

In a Patient-Aware OR, patient safety and OR efficiency go hand in hand. The surgical team is able to focus more fully and effectively on the patient while streamlining resource management. Hardwired safeguards and real-time tools help promote safety practices like timeout and prophylactic antibiotic administration as well as protect against wrong patient/wrong site/wrong procedure and other “never events.” OR teams are able to track equipment and consult with specialists in remote locations without interrupting the flow of surgery.

A connection between the OR and pathology is one example of how comprehensive information integration in the Patient-Aware OR assures accurate communication and facilitates workflow. Relevant data such as specimen status log appears on the OR-Dashboard while OR1 routes the latest image of the speciment sent from pathology. Both departments are able to engage in discussion as images and data are updated, so that questions and concerns can be immediately addressed and surgery can proceed as efficiently as possible.

Offering the ideal operating room layout for performing minimally invasive and conventional surgical procedures, the KARL STORZ OR1 provides intraoperative routing of full HD images while offering superior audio-visual communication capabilities for video-conferencing. The intuitive OR1 user interface provides simplified control over all elements of the integrated OR, directly from the sterile field. With the touch of a button, the OR team is able to control a full range of functions from medical devices to peripheral systems, including: intraoperative recordings, lighting, the OR table, and other device settings.

LiveData Milestones

New Installations
LiveData is collaborating with KARL STORZ in the development of Patient-Aware ORs for NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. The new installations are targeted for Columbia Medical Center as well as Cornell’s Advanced Therapeutic Services Center, currently under construction.

New OR-Dashboard Features
Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center has integrated real-time pathology data into LiveData OR-Dashboard. Information on specimen status comes directly from the pathology lab and appears in real-time in the OR. Both surgeons and pathologists report that, as a result, there has been a notable improvement in the accuracy and comprehensiveness of information flowing between the two departments.

At Saint Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan, LiveData continues development of real-time dashboard tools to assist the OR team in meeting SCIP guidelines. LiveData is also working with the hospital to improve the timeliness of reporting SCIP data.

Advances in Standardizing Technology
The U.S. Army Telemedicine and Advanced Technology Research Center (TATRC) selected LiveData for a grant for Phase II of our work with CIMIT’s Medical Device Plug-and-Play (MD PnP) efforts to develop an integrated clinical environment. Subject to funding, the Phase II award follows successful completion of the Phase I “ICEMAN” project.

LiveData OR-Dashboard Survey
The results are in: in a recent survey at a major academic hospital, nurses gave the OR-Dashboard overwhelmingly high marks for contributing to patient safety and facilitating their tasks.
