National Time Out Day to be Recognized on June 18th; June 2008

To encourage surgical teams to take time out before every invasive procedure to confirm correct patient, correct  procedure, correct surgical site, and other important information for ensuring patient safety, AORN is partnering with the Council on Surgical and Perioperative Safety (CSPS) and The Joint Commission to recognize National Time Out Day on June 18th.

Wrong-site surgery and other preventable mistakes still occur too frequently in US operating rooms. That's why in 2004, The Joint Commission released the Universal Protocol urging that a "time out" precede every surgical procedure to verify the correct patient information prior to incision. In support of the Universal Protocol, AORN began sponsoring National Time Out Day to raise awareness about the importance of requiring the entire surgical team—including physicians, nurses, and surgical technologists—to pause before all invasive procedures to communicate as a group and confirm key information about the patient and procedure to help prevent errors from occurring.

LiveData OR-Dashboard, specifically designed to assist the OR team in improving patient safety, includes a Time Out feature. The dashboard automatically displays a Timeout panel just prior to the onset of surgery. Information and real-time tools for assisting the OR team with their specific procedure remain on display until the safety pause  is officially completed according to hospital protocol.
