New Markets Emerge as LiveData RTI Server Enables Electric Generators to Sell Energy Reserves
CAMBRIDGE, Massachusetts, February 8, 2008 – LiveData, Inc. today announced its entry into a new and important sector of the power market, facilitating the bidding and transmission of electric power reserves between generation plants and regional distribution utilities. LiveData is a leading innovator of real-time data integration and data display technology. The heart of LiveData’s solution, LiveData RTI Server, captures, transforms, and delivers real-time data streams across diverse systems and protocols. RTI Server provides the key linkage between generation plant systems and the energy/ancillary services markets run by Independent Transmission System Operators (ISOs).
LiveData recently installed its first LiveData RTI Server at the Fox Energy Center, a Kaukauna, Wisconsin-based generation facility that is a unit of GE Energy Financial Services. RTI Server will be used to exchange the real-time data with the Midwest ISO (MISO) for capacity marketing. RTI Server, supporting the Inter-Control Center Communications Protocol, also enables users to send meter data and receive dispatch and AGC (Automatic Generation Control) signals as the market requires. MISO is expected to launch its new market in June.
MISO is one of several ISOs that are establishing new markets for operating reserves, or ancillary services, as part of their Federal Energy Regulatory Commission charter. Ancillary services comprise reserve generation used to maintain the stability of the electric power supply when a primary generator or transmission line has an outage, caused by a sudden load, storm, or other event. ISOs such as MISO detect these conditions immediately and send dispatch signals, using the ICCP protocol, to ancillary generators. The new ancillary markets will enable power generation utilities to bid their reserves to dynamically satisfy this demand.
“Electric power is a unique resource: it must be used when generated, or it is lost,” said Jeffrey Robbins, LiveData CEO. “This is a new and important market sector for LiveData. When the bidding and resale process for unused assets is easier and more efficient, all parties benefit, starting with the generating facility and including the public at large.”
