"Wall of Knowledge" Advances Patient Safety

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Nov. 28, 2007 – LiveData, Inc. [www.LiveData.com], leaders in real-time data integration and display, today announced that its Visually Integrated Operating Room solution has gone “live” at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital.

The Visually Integrated Operating Room (VIOR) harnesses available information resources – from information systems, medical devices, surgical video, PACS systems, and more – to deliver a comprehensive picture of the surgical case, updated in real time. LiveData’s solution at NewYork-Presbyterian, implemented in collaboration with audio-visual systems partner York Telecom, incorporates voice and video communications to deliver necessary information to the OR team, when and where they need it, easily and instantly.

NewYork-Presbyterian has implemented the VIOR, its “Wall of Knowledge,” in four operating rooms located at its two major medical centers: orthopedic and neurosurgery ORs at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center; and at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center in urology and gastrointestinal surgery ORs. The diversity of these initial implementations will enable the Hospital to address workflow requirements across a wide range of surgical environments.

The system gives clinicians the latest surgical management technology to best care for patients. By integrating and displaying data from disparate areas, it provides information on multiple facets of the operation, at any given moment.

The installation at NewYork-Presbyterian features several innovations, delivering instant access to visual information within and beyond the OR. Based on LiveData OR-Dashboard, the VIOR captures and presents information from such diverse systems as McKesson HSM, Picis OR Manager, Philips CompuRecord Anesthesia Information System, GE Datex-Omeda Anesthesia Systems, Philips Physiological Monitors, Applied Logic Abacus tray tracking system, and more. LiveData’s VIOR Control System enables the surgeon to control audio and visual communications directly from the sterile field, providing one-touch video routing and instant links to Pathology and Central Sterile Supply.

This new technology will help meet this need, adding new functionality to our high-tech ORs, facilitating teamwork and enhancing patient safety” said Dr. Dennis Fowler, medical director for perioperative services at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia and the United States Surgical Professor of Clinical Surgery at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. “Everything from big-screen video of the surgical field to its advanced vital-sign monitoring helps the team get the best possible picture of the patient and the procedure.”

Dr. Jeffrey Milsom, a surgeon at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center and the DeCosse Distinguished Professor of Surgery at Weill Medical College of Cornell University, said, “Everything in the operating room is undergoing change—from the ceiling lights to the floor design. These rooms permit us to call on high-definition imaging, telestreaming, inputs from inside and out the body—all at the fingertips of the surgeon and assistant surgeon.”

The technology also helps track and anticipate events. For instance, it will display a graph showing how the patient’s blood pressure rises and falls over the duration of the procedure.  It will also present a timer to indicate when a drug should be administered.
