NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital to Install LiveData’s Visually Integrated Operating Room; ‘Wall of Knowledge’ Advances Patient Safety

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--LiveData, Inc. [www.LiveData.com ], leaders in real-time data integration and display, today announced the installation of its Visually Integrated Operating Room solution at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital.

The Visually Integrated Operating Room (VIOR) harnesses available information resources – from information systems, medical devices, surgical video, PACS systems, and more – to deliver a comprehensive picture of the surgical case, updated in real time. Working with LiveData Inc.’s audio-visual systems partner York Telecom, the LiveData solution at NewYork-Presbyterian incorporates voice and video communications to deliver necessary information to the OR team, when and where they need it, easily and instantly.

NewYork-Presbyterian will implement the VIOR, its “wall of knowledge,” in four operating rooms located at its two major medical centers. At NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center, installations will be in orthopedic and neurosurgery; and, at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center installations will be in urology and gastrointestinal surgery. The diversity of these initial implementations will enable the Hospital to address workflow requirements across a wide range of surgical environments.

The system will give clinicians the latest surgical management technology to best care for patients. By integrating and displaying data from disparate areas, it provides information on multiple facets of the operation, at any given moment.

The installation at NewYork-Presbyterian will feature several innovations, delivering instant access to visual information within and beyond the OR. Based on LiveData OR-Dashboard, the VIOR will automatically capture and present information from such diverse systems as McKesson HSM, Picis OR Manager, Philips CompuRecord Anesthesia Information System, GE Datex-Omeda Anesthesia Systems, Philips Physiological Monitors, Applied Logic Abacus tray tracking system, and more. The complete VIOR solution will also deliver PACS images, and video links on demand with Pathology and Central Sterile Supply. Within the OR, a simple touch-screen interface will enable full control of audio-visual resources.

“Surgery in the twenty-first century requires a complete picture of the patient’s up-to-the-second medical status. This new technology will help meet this need, adding new functionality to our high-tech ORs,” said Dr. Dennis Fowler, medical director for perioperative services at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia and the United States Surgical Professor of Clinical Surgery at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons.

“From a nursing perspective, this system will promote quality patient care by enhancing our ability to organize and facilitate every procedure,” said Kathleen Gaul Burke, RN, Director of Perioperative Nursing at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell.

York Telecom, a leading audio and video systems integrator, teamed with LiveData to design and demonstrate the VIOR. York Telecom’s A/V routing and control enables the bidirectional presentation of video information.

“Clinicians with different specialties have the same vision: integrating information so it is more accessible to everyone. And now, they’ll have it. What was impossible just two or three years ago can be done today,” said LiveData CEO Jeffrey Robbins. “Workflow improves when information flow improves, and the inevitable benefit is the promotion of patient safety. As an academic medical center, NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital is vitally committed to these advances, and we are proud to be a key part of their strategy.”
